Joe Robertson, who has built more than 50 bars in Newcastle, Leeds, Cardiff and London, also conceived a number of exceptional concepts during the 80′s and 90′s. Each unit had its own conceptual approach and market segment.

Luckies Bar (now The Five Swans) together with St Mary’s place west

In 1986 Joe Robertson of Newcastle acquired Northgate Property Company Limited, a private company with substantial property assets on St Mary’s Place.

Following the building of John Dobson Street the junction with St Mary’s Place had become derelict. In conjunction with the City of Newcastle Joe developed the corner unit into Luckies Bar and Joe Rigatonis Restaurant with a return frontage to Vine Lane.

The area between Luckies and John Dobson Street was laid to car parking. Luckies Bar successfully traded for more than 25 years and was recently refurbished into the Five Swans Public House.

This development was an excellent example of the partnership between the local authorities and private enterprise involving the use of liquor licensing to bring to life premises previously derelict and unused.
